MANN+HUMMEL in Burnley, northern England, recently hosted a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now, UK charities that support anyone diagnosed with cancer. Coffee mornings for Macmillan are held annually on the same day throughout the country by individuals, groups and companies and MANN+HUMMEL have taken part for many years.

Coffee morning for cancer

On the day of coffee morning, cakes were displayed in the company canteen and employees were invited to buy a slice during their break. The range of goods on offer was extensive and there was something to tempt everyone – from cupcakes and doughnuts to Swiss roll and Battenberg cake. In the past, we even had some home-made cakes baked by our enthusiastic colleagues, but this year we kept it simple and stuck to shop-bought. While enjoying their cakes, employees were encouraged to guess the number of sweets in a jar and make an extra contribution to the donation box. The lucky winner of the competition jar was only out by three sweets!

During the coffee morning we were also able to raffle a surprise item which, thanks to a generous donation by one of our suppliers, turned out to be a Fitbit fitness tracker. I hope it comes in very handy for the winner as they try to burn off the calories after eating so much cake!

Overall, the event raised £500 which was split evenly between the two charities and my thanks go to Elizabeth Hillam, Customer Care Manager, and Denise Wyre, BOM Administrator, for co-ordinating the event. We will certainly be fundraising again next year.

Our fundraising activities

Cancer is a disease that has affected several colleagues, either personally or through family members, so their generosity is always touching.  The event is always very popular and raises much-needed funds for research into the disease.

We are also closely involved with our local hospice. This is an organisation which has touched the lives of some of our colleagues, whose relatives have received palliative care there. Our employees raise funds for their vital work through, for example, Christmas raffles and sponsored walks.

The impulse to raise funds comes from the enthusiasm and commitment of our employees. Supporting worthy causes is something very dear to their hearts. I am very grateful for their continued engagement which ensures that MANN+HUMMEL are active in our local community.
