As Service Technicians for MANN+HUMMEL VOKES AIR UK, my colleague, Wayne Young, and I are responsible for filter fit out and associated works. We have just completed one of the UK’s if not the world’s largest air intake filter system change out programs. Terminal 5 is the jewel in the Heathrow Airport crown and passenger and staff comfort is a top priority – and clean air is a key ingredient to that comfort.
Our work can be described by applying our FILTER values
F – Filtration. The air filters used in this installation are our prime product – Revo II air filter which removes up to 85% of all airborne contaminants of 0.4 micron and above. There are 726 filters arranged in three banks each measuring 11x11m in total filtering a massive 2,500,000m3/hr of intake air.
I – Installation. Our job, as Service Technicians, is to remove all dirty filters and then install the new products and to make sure that the filter system is in pristine condition to hand over to the customer. In this case, we had to manage this within a five night timeframe as day time change out is impossible due to the disruption to passengers that it would cause. Additionally, we have to jet wash all of the frost coils to rid the system of 12 months’ worth of accumulated grime.
L – Logistics. In total 165 cartons of dirty filters have to be removed from the system, packaged and taken to waste and the new filters have to be security screened, transported from the holding area to the terminal and then installed. It also provides some excellent weight training for us!
T – Testing. After installation, the system is tested for air filtration compliance and integrity
E – Energy saving. Our flagship filter, the low energy Revo II has a performance profile reduces energy demand from 2,250,000kWh for standard filters to 1,200,000kWh. In turn this reduces CO2 emissions by 600 tons a year
R – Risk management. All processes and procedures are managed to reduce the potential of risk to staff, operatives and passengers within a highly regulated environment.
All in all, a very prestigious job although a very tiring one as our normal sleep patterns are disrupted. Now, where is my bed!
