After my graduation and working for nearly 10 years in India, I decided to pursue my MBA from Hochschule Pforzheim, Germany. Pforzheim Business School not only offers a well-structured course, it also cooperates closely with various companies on projects, guest lectures and excursions to various industries so that students can get practical know-how. It’s because of this program, that I got a wonderful opportunity to visit the headquarters of MANN+HUMMEL in Ludwigsburg, with my fellow MBA batch mates.
Senior management employees from MANN+HUMMEL gave very stimulating presentations about strategic management and innovation management at MANN+HUMMEL. It was fascinating for me (as a student) to be able to see that the concepts being taught in our marketing lectures are exactly what is being used here. They also explained to us, how an idea is nurtured in the company and the various critical steps from its generation stage to a market ready solution. Moreover, now I am really looking forward for advanced courses on Innovation and strategic management.
The best was yet to come – after the presentations we got involved in a Design Thinking exercise. For most of us, including me, this was a new and exciting experience. Design thinking refers to creative strategies designers utilize during the process of designing. Design thinking in business uses the designer’s sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can convert into customer value and market opportunity. The activity demonstrated how an idea could be developed by using a given model, by being creative and thinking out of the box. This approach can also be used to consider issues and resolve problems more broadly than within professional design practice, and can be applied in business and social issues.
In the afternoon, we were given a tour of the filter museum and production plant. Coming from an automation industry background, it has always been fascinating for me to see an automated workshop, state of the art robotics and technology incorporated in the plant and manufacturing.
The program variety throughout the day and the opportunity to experience a Design Thinking Workshop with experts in a professional environment was highly appreciated by all of us. Thanks to MANN + HUMMEL for having us!
