Air pollution represents the fourth greatest risk of death worldwide and 92% of the world’s population face air pollution levels that are deemed unsafe by the World Health Organization (WHO). These are staggering figures.
The MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus video highlights the very serious problem of air pollution – something that effects conurbations around the world – in a very accessible way. Who hasn’t suffered sore throats and watering eyes, or encountered bad smells, when just walking down a busy street? Over the medium- to long-term the effects can be much worse: allergies, respiratory conditions and even premature death.
A problem in our capital city
Here in the UK, the problem was highlighted at the start of the year when the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, issued a toxic air alert for eight areas within the capital. He warned of a public health emergency and highlighted the apparently worsening UK air quality. In fact, the ‘red’ air warning was issued as a cloud of pollution contributed towards the breaching of London’s annual legal nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution limit – just five days into 2017.
This breach prompted campaigners to step up calls to ban diesel vehicles from the capital’s streets. However, the Euro 6 emission standards, introduced in 2015, mean that diesel engines are allowed to emit just 80mg/km of NO2 – and the prospect of reducing that further would be a challenge for manufacturers.
Indoors as well as outdoors
But it is not just outdoors that air quality is a problem. Indoor air pollution can be up to five times higher than outside – especially in confined spaces such as vehicle interiors. You could breathe the same amount of pollution just sitting in a car for six minutes as walking down a city street for 30 minutes. Isn’t that a worry? And shouldn’t we be able to do something about it?
Here at MANN+HUMMEL UK, the Aftermarket Team have been working on a campaign to raise the profile of our new MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus cabin air filters on the UK market. We think the Aftermarket industry has an important role to play by helping to improve the purity of vehicle interior air. I am proud to work for a company that takes the very real health risks associated with air pollution seriously and is working on solutions to the problem.
3 is the magic number!
Cabin air filters are the only protection between the occupants of a vehicle and the outside air. FreciousPlus is the new third generation of cabin filter on offer from MANN-FILTER and has 3 layers of protection. The particle filter layer blocks almost 100% of coarse particles, including road and tyre dust. The second carbon- activated layer removes unpleasant odours and harmful gases. The third “magic” biofunctional layer has an additional antimicrobial coating which prevents bacteria and mould from growing. FreciousPlus can block up to 2.5 microns (P.M2.5) – given the human hair is 70 microns, you can see the scale of filtration.
Isn’t it great to be able to sell something that will protect people from one of the biggest health issues facing the world?
