Power-Gen is one of the most important international exhibitions and conferences in my calendar for the power generation and gas turbine markets. The conference attracts thousands of visitors from around the world and the exhibition boasts around 900 stands. And of course, MANN+HUMMEL had a stand at the fair in Orlando in December last year with a truly international team representing the company: Mike Wirtz, Kevin Babb and Bob Krueger from MANN+HUMMEL USA, Johnny Hauballe from MANN+HUMMEL Denmark, and me, Carlo Coltri, from MANN+HUMMEL Italy.

international team

Thanks to some pre-publicity and online marketing campaigns, the three days turned out to be very busy ones for the whole team. We had many in-depth conversations with both US and international visitors from air intake and gas turbine manufacturers to engineering companies and end-users. What’s more, we also met some new colleagues from Tri-Dim Filter, a specialist air filtration company that joined the MANN+HUMMEL family in August 2018. The group was combining a visit to Power-Gen with training provided by Holger Steinke, Key Account Manager.

Compact filter launched at exhibition

One highlight was the launch of a new compact filter which was developed by MANN+HUMMEL research to address the particular needs of the off-shore market. The Aircube Pro Power S features a specially-developed, synthetic-based media that withstands mechanical stress better than conventional glass fibre media. Plus, it is water and salt repellent which, of course, is of particular importance to off-shore and coastal installations which can be situated in some of the most inhospitable locations in the world.

Visitors were impressed by Aircube Pro Power S’s high burst resistance and ability to cope with high air flow rate; this robustness is crucial for maintaining the long service lives of both the filter itself and the gas turbine it serves. Off-shore air intakes are typically smaller than their on-land counterparts, but the filter’s compact design does not compromise its ability to cope with extremely high air flow rates, up to 6000 m3/h.

With increasing demand for greater efficiency for gas turbines, air intake filtration is now recognised by both manufacturers and end-users as a crucial part of the system as a whole. On our Power-Gen stand, we were able to show how the Aircube Pro Power S provides defence against a myriad of contaminants, reducing downtime and protecting the expensive inner elements of a turbine. The launch was a great success!

Making new contacts from around the world

For me, there were a few opportunities to get away from the stand and explore the exhibition. I managed to catch up with contacts in the industry and make a few more new connections. Unfortunately, the days were so long there wasn’t much time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Orlando – like many business trips, my main memories are the exhibition hall and the hotel! However, I have been to Orlando a few times, so I didn’t feel like I was missing out.

See you in New Orleans

This year, Power-Gen will take place in a new location – New Orleans. Again, the MANN+HUMMEL team will be exhibiting and showcasing our latest filter technology. I hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you in November.
