This year, a joint MANN+HUMMEL Service Center and MANN+HUMMEL Czech Republic team participated for the first time in the MANN+HUMMEL basketball tournament.
The original idea to participate actually came from another sporting event – the Citylauf run in Ludwigsburg, where MANN+HUMMEL enter a large team of colleagues from across the world. A team from the Czech Republic participated last year and one of my colleagues got chatting to some (very tall) Spanish guys. They had actually been in Ludwigsburg to participate in the 2016 Basketball Tournament the day before. They told him all about it and encouraged us to enter a team.
Getting a team together
Basketball isn’t very popular in the Czech Republic – football and ice hockey are the preferred sports – so we wondered if we would be able to get a team together. We needed at least 7 people (5 in the team, plus 2 substitutes). In fact, 14 of us took part in the training sessions, although not everyone could participate in the tournament due to work commitments.
On the Friday of the tournament weekend, we set off from Nová Ves in three cars for the 10-hour drive to Tešanj in Bosnia. After spending some of the journey discussing tactics and strategy for the games, we arrived very tired but very excited for the next day.
The friendly competition starts
On Saturday we played our first games. The venue was a sports hall where the local professional basketball team also played. The atmosphere was great and the local crowd filled the stands to support all the teams. Over the two days, we played four games with our colleagues from MANN+HUMMEL Bosnia, Spain, France and Germany with the result of two wins and two lost games. But more important than the result was the atmosphere, collegiality and family approach of all teams and players.
The whole event was well organized from beginning to end. Before the tournament started, we were able to visit the plant in Tešanj and learn something about MANN+HUMMEL Bosnia. Between the games, the organizational team also arranged for a guided tour through the historic centre of the city and to the famous fortress. Saturday night was spent all together in a traditional restaurant which served a range of delicious local food. The evening strengthened the team spirit of the whole MANN+HUMMEL basketball community.
See you next year in the Czech Republic!
After two wonderful days, we left Tešanj on Sunday with the cup for 3rd place. The weekend was a great experience and MANN+HUMMEL Service Center und MANN+HUMMEL Czech Republic will actually be hosting the Tournament next year in Nová Ves. Our colleagues in Bosnia were great hosts and that has inspired us to make the 2018 event just as good (or even better!). We look forward to welcoming the teams to the Czech Republic!
