Our latest product, the StarBox2 spin-on separator, is a little star in the truest sense of the word. The separator’s design, which is intended to optimise flow, and a newly developed sealing concept have enabled us to reduce flow loss and to lower energy costs in the long-term. What’s more, pressure loss can now be reduced by up to 25 percent in ECO mode. This means energy savings of up to 1350 kWh across the entire service life of the box.
So how did it all come about? Energy savings are a real hot topic at the moment and potential savings in the area of compressed air represent one of the biggest market drivers for the future of compressed air technology. This is a situation that we wanted to exploit. Betram Bartelt, the long-serving head of sales for compressors and vacuum filtration, and Klemens Dworatzek, the head of development for separators, rose to the challenge.
They looked into how far pressure loss could be reduced during the operation of spin-on separators in order to achieve appropriate energy savings. These initial thoughts soon turned into serious considerations, and ultimately led to a bet: Could a reduction of 10% be achieved in this almost thirty-year-old product? Work began on technical development, lab tests and computer-aided simulations were carried out and we finally achieved a 25% reduction. So, yes, it was possible!
Two application options give users enormous flexibility, as they can choose whether reduced pressure loss and the related energy savings are of relevance or whether increased volumetric flow is of greater concern. A wider range of volumetric flow rates is particularly advantageous for applications involving compressors with a variable drive speed.
An idea became reality
Following this success, we decided that the spin-on separator was ready for the market launch, so we finalised the product just in time for ComVac 2017. Budget and the planned maximum production costs were part of the plan. After some intense development work we finally succeeded! Just recently, the new spin-on separator was nominated for the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Technology Award, and our little box made a big impression at the ceremony, held in the Schwabenlandhalle in Fellbach. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly when Environment Minister, Franz Untersteller, presented the award for second place in the energy efficiency category.
Personally speaking, I think the StarBox2 is most impressive and one of the best products available on the market. Mr Bartelt also agrees, describing our spin-on separator as “the best box of all time”.
